Flood Warnings in Vermont

Following a winter of never-ending snow, including numerous large blizzards, which left snow on the ground from December 2010 through to April 2011, one of our first warmer days was today, in roughly the 60's.  Until today, the snow melt was happening somewhat slowly (yesterday I raked parts of the yard and also helped shovel snowbanks back).  But with the warm temperatures and thunderstorms the flood watches became very real.

Driving around was an experience.  There were flooded fields, babbling brooks where none were before and raging rivers.  At one point I drove across a flooded paved road, feeling the entire time that I was one of those people you see on the news floating down the river in a car, wondering who would try to do something like that!

More rain in the forecast for tonight and as the snow continues to melt in the mountains I wonder what tomorrow will bring.

The fields alongside Pettingill Road, Essex, which had to be closed.

A back road in Fairfax that was flooded.  Someone thought twice before crossing and turned around instead.
